Back to the topic of wine grape varieties, another 6 kinds of grapes will be introduced in the followings.
It achieved a global popularity though wines made from Gamay come almost exclusively from one region, Beaujolais. Gamay is a black grape variety that produces wines with high acidity, low to medium tannins and red fruit flavours including raspberry, red cherry, red plum. (Beaujolais)
西拉 Syrah/ Shiraz
Syrah is the French name while Shiraz is the name commonly used in Australia.
It is a thick skinned black grape that requires a moderate to warm climate to ripen fully and produces wines with medium to high levels of tannins and acidity. It gives fresh black fruit flavours, herbal notes and black pepper aromas.
It is an aromatic variety that grows best in cool to moderate climates. The famous region for Gewürztraminer is Alsace AOC in France. The grapes accumulate high levels of sugar during ripening that results in a high alcohol wine. It has pronounced floral aromas of rose as well as stone fruit and tropical fruit like lychee. It is typically unpacked to preserve the floral aromas.
灰皮諾 Pinot Grigio/ Pinot Gris
Pinot Grigio is the Italian name and Pinot Gris is the French name. This grape is very versatile in the vineyard and produces two distinct styles of wine. The most common style is a dry, light bodied wine with high acidity and simple flavours of apple and lemon. This results from early harvest. Another rule is delaying the harvest. The riper grapes are higher in sugar, lower in acidity and more complex in flavor.
Riesling is an aromatic grape that produces wines with pronounced fruity and floral aromas and high acidity. It’s fruit flavours in the wine vary according to the level of ripeness in the grapes at time of harvest. Just ripe grapes produce wine with flavours of apple, pear, lemon and lime. Extra ripe grapes produce wine with flavours of stone fruit(peach), tropical fruit(mango, pineapple) and sometimes even dried fruit.
This grape variety is suitable for the production of outstanding quality wines at all sweetness levels.
In the young period, semillon wines have simple primary flavours of apple, lemon and grass. Depending on its ripeness, the wines can range from medium to high in acidity and light to full body. Semillon is susceptible to botrytis and is therefore the most important variety grown in Sauternes to produce the sweet white wine.
