In the Middle Ages, Poujeaux was seigneury owing allegiance to Latour Saint Mambert the future Château Latour. Winegrowing at Poujeaux dates back to the 19th century. A period of prosperity was followed by a series of different owners and the vineyard was broken up in the early 20th century. Fortunately, it was reconsolidated by the Theil family who did much to give the wine a fine reputation.
Château Poujeaux was purchased by the Cuvelier family (who already owned Clos Fourtet, a Premier Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Émilion) in January 2008. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in Poujeaux’s history. Philippe Cuvelier and his son, Matthieu, asked Stéphane Derenoncourt to advise them, while retaining the existing winemaking team. This is headed by Christophe Labenne, the grandson of the former owners.
This vines are grown on a magnificent gravelly rise in the heart of the Médoc. While perpetuating the wine’s generous yet delicate style, the new orientation is toward enhanced precision in order to bring Poujeaux up to its ultimate potential.
Blending demands rigour, concentration and sensitivity. The work involves associating, dissociating and tasting to give life to a new vintage that remains faithful to the spirit of Poujeaux. The Grand Vin, Château Poujeaux, unites the qualities of elegance, depth and balance. 250,000 bottles are produced each year. Salle de Poujeaux, the second wine of Château Poujeaux is distinguished by an audacious blending process that brings together the delicacy of crisp, fresh fruit with the richness of riper fruit. Its supple tannins make it seductive from a very young age. 80,000 bottles are produced each year. Haut de Poujeaux, originating from 3.5 hectares in the Haut-Médoc appellation, represents only a small fraction of the production at roughly 20,000 bottles. It captures the authenticity of the terroir and family spirit.
